The beech forests in the Shumen Plateau Nature Reserve are over 100 years old. This is one of the reasons why trees and branches fall in strong winds in the areas where the Moesian beech is found. "Such processes are normal for the species that has reached such an age," commented Eng. Vasil Vassilev, Director of the Shumen Plateau Nature Reserve Directorate. He specified that the signs of decay in the beech are not clearly expressed, and the small soil cover and air pollution in recent years have an impact on the shortening of the life of the trees.<\/p>\n

The area between the Orbita complex and the Bigora shelter was cleared of fallen beech trees several times, large trunks and branches were removed along the path to the Biserna cave. Inspections also show obstacles on main routes, such as the one to the Rock Monastery above the village of Khan Krum.<\/p>\n

The Moesian beech is one of the most common tree species in the Park, along with the hornbeam and the common hornbeam. A significant part of the forests were artificially created thanks to the hard work of foresters and the public. The territory also includes the "Bukaka" reserve, which occupies 64 ha. and was declared for the protection of the existing beech forest that is over a hundred years old.<\/p>\n
