A rare species of bat has been found in the Biserna cave. The winged mammal is of the Bechstein's bat species and was observed during winter monitoring of cave-loving bats. The study is being carried out under a project between the National Museum of Natural History at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and the University of Shumen "Ep. Konstantin Preslavski", funded by the Scientific Research Fund of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The cave was entered by researchers, students and representatives of the Shumen Plateau Nature Reserve, strictly observing all requirements for the protection of the protected area and with minimal disturbance to the bat colonies. During the observation, the colonies are photographed to make a census and samples are collected. After the necessary studies are carried out, the bats are returned to the habitat, and the data are summarized.<\/p>\n

The species "Beechshtyn's bat" inhabits mainly pure beech forests and is rarely found in caves, as it likes to live in hollows. In the "Biserna" cave, 14 species of bats have been identified during previous studies. Data on the number and species at the moment will be announced after being analyzed and summarized.<\/p>\n

We remind you that during the winter months, the Biserna Cave does not accept visitors, as the bats fall into a state of hibernation and are extremely vulnerable.
