First-graders from Sofia University "P.Volov" donated birdhouses on the occasion of the 40th birthday of the Shumen Plateau Nature Park. The houses were made together with the parents, and the children participated in placing them on the trees in the "Kyoskovete" forest park together with the entire park team.
On the occasion of the birthday, an exhibition entitled "Before and Now" was opened in the Administrative Center of the Directorate of the Shumen Plateau Nature Reserve. At the beginning of the 20th century, the plateau above Shumen was deforested, but as a result of the hard work of foresters, park employees and the public, today forests occupy 90% of the territory. The exhibition used photos from the State Archives-Shumen and photographs by Tatyana Dimitrova and Krasimir Hristov - experts from the North-Eastern State Enterprise. In addition to the change over the years, the changes during the different seasons were also tracked.
"Our main task is to preserve our green wealth and educate children in a love of nature," noted Eng. Vasil Vassilev, director of the Shumen Plateau Nature Reserve. Maintaining the park infrastructure is also among the Directorate's main priorities, despite the frequent acts of vandalism.
Shumen Plateau Nature Park was declared a protected area on February 5, 1980 and occupies an area of 3,896 ha of the plateau of the same name. Eng. Vasil Vassilev emphasized that the park was planned and built according to all the rules for creating a park, and its proximity to the city makes it accessible and frequently visited. Over the years, tourist routes have been built and marked to all natural and cultural landmarks in the area. Various thematic routes have also been created with an educational purpose - "Lesson on the Forest Trail", "Karst under Protection - a Gift for Generations", "Forestry Trail", as well as a Specialized Trail for the Blind, an Outdoor Classroom and a Forest Labyrinth for the Little Ones. 11 shelters and places for recreation and picnics have been built. Some of them have been "adopted" by companies and organizations.
