Forestry educators from Shumen visited the General Toshevo State Forestry School

190 children from the General Toshevo municipality participated in a lesson on Forest Pedagogy, organized by the team of the State Forestry. Educators from the Shumen Plateau Nature Reserve and the State Forestry Service showed the children how to navigate in the forest, what the different types of markings mean and what the compass is for. Through the activities, the 3rd and 4th grade students learned to prepare equipment for a hike in the mountains, but they had the most fun during the competition for the fastest tent pitching and setting up camp. An important part of the forest lessons are the rules for lighting an open fire and they were presented to the children. Forestry employees from the General Toshevo State Forestry Service showed the children the equipment for fighting fire elements and demonstrated the equipment used and a backpack sprayer.

A lesson was held with children from grades 1 and 2 of the Nikola Yonkov Vaptsarov Secondary School and Hristo Smirnenski Primary School, dedicated to the protected species of the lesser spotted eagle. The children received as a gift the book "Tales from the Nest", in which forest educators in an accessible way introduce them to the life of the lesser spotted eagle, how it reproduces, what it uses for food and where it is found. The children learned and had fun, as they all took on the role of eaglets - they built nests, hatched eggs and looked for food for the little chicks so that they could grow strong and fly south. At the end of the games, each "eaglet" received a "sweet surprise" from the hosts from the General Toshevo State Forestry School. The Forest Pedagogy lesson and the booklet "Tales from the Nest" are implemented thanks to the Project "Measures for the Conservation of the Lesser Spotted Eagle and its Habitats in Bulgaria", which is part of the EU LIFE program. The project partners are the IAG, BSPB, SIDP and SEDP, and its goal is to create new habitats for the Lesser Spotted Eagle, to protect the species and to preserve the biodiversity of the forests in Bulgaria.
