The Green Patrols participated in a lesson about bats

A lesson about bats was held by experts from the Shumen Plateau Nature Reserve with fourth-graders. The children are from the Green Patrols club at the Panayot Volov Secondary School in Shumen and are active participants in numerous lessons and eco-initiatives. During the activities, the children learned why flying mammals are useful, what their way of life is, who their natural enemies are and the threats to their survival. The Green Patrols were introduced to the different species and ways to protect them and what to do if we encounter a bat. An educational film was shown that illustrates the life of winged mammals and their usefulness, since most of the insects they feed on are pests in agriculture, and in cities they help fight mosquitoes. Each child made their own bats in an art workshop and had fun with outdoor eco-games.

Every year in October, the Information Campaign "Night of the Bats" is held in Bulgaria, which aims to increase attention to the conservation of this unique species. This year marks 30 years of the Agreement for the Conservation of Populations of European Bat Species (EUROBATS) and 25 years of the celebration of Bat Night in Europe.

There are 14 species of bats found on the territory of the Shumen Plateau, and in Bulgaria - 33 species of bats out of the possible 35 in Europe, and all of them are insectivorous.
