Young researchers study water resources on the Shumen plateau

Young researchers from the Panayot Volov University in Shumen studied the water quality of the Poroyna River, which springs from the Shumen Plateau. The lesson about water in the Shumen Plateau Nature Park, in which nearly 70 children participated, was held jointly with the forest educators from the Park, the expert from the Shumen Municipality Galin Ganchev and employees of the Regional Laboratory at the Executive Agency for the Environment. Chief Specialist Silvia Hristova and Chief Expert Nadezhda Ivanova demonstrated how to measure the indicators of surface waters - temperature, acidity, oxygen saturation, and then the students made their own measurements. It was established that the qualities of the river are suitable for life to exist in it. Irina Pavlova from the Park explained to the children the specific hydrological features of the plateau and how declaring the territory as protected contributes to the purity of the waters and springs.

Galin Ganchev presented the emergence and development of water supply for the population from ancient times to the present day, after which the students went on a hike on the plateau to see what the water facilities "capture" and "pumping station" are.

The lesson is dedicated to Forest Week 2022, and the activities are part of a school STEM project on the topic "How will we ensure the water supply of our city if we cannot use the Ticha Dam?", on which students from 4th "a", 5th "b", 7th "a" grades and the Power Vortex robotics club are working together with various institutions and partners.
