Children plant trees on the occasion of the International Day of Forests

Afforestation on the occasion of March 21 - International Day of Forests is organized by the Shumen Plateau Nature Reserve together with students from the Sava Dobroplodni Secondary School and the Rehabilitation Center for People with Visual Impairments. The new trees will delight visitors to the Kyoshkovete Forest Park. Fifth-graders learned more about the forestry profession and methods of afforestation and put their knowledge into practice. Experts from the park showed seeds of the most common tree species in the region and explained the role of the forester in the creation and cultivation of forests. One of the trees was donated by the Rehabilitation Center for People with Visual Impairments, whose users and employees participated in the event. The other trees are from the Shumen State Forest Service, and the afforestation was coordinated with the Shumen Municipality.

The International Day of Forests was established at the initiative of the 23rd session of the European Confederation of Agriculture, held in November 1971, and is supported by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. The celebration aims to focus attention on the effective management and conservation of all the forests of the planet with their diverse fauna and flora.

Forests occupy 90% of the area of the Shumen Plateau Nature Reserve. 535 species of higher plants are found here, of which 64 have nature conservation status. Over 240 species of vertebrates, 345 species of invertebrates and 28 species of amphibians and reptiles have been identified.
