Sunday hike in the park

A hike to the rock monastery above the village of Khan Krum is organized by the Directorate of the Shumen Plateau Nature Reserve on Sunday, May 26. The initiative is on the occasion of May 28 - Parks Day in Bulgaria and in connection with the campaign of the Executive Forestry Agency to raise public awareness on the topics of forest management and the forestry profession,

The hike will start at 10 a.m., and the meeting point is the Summer Information Center of the Shumen Plateau Nature Reserve, which is located in the parking lot next to the Founders of the Bulgarian State monument. The hike lasts about 3 hours with breaks, and Park employees will introduce those present to the history of the rock monasteries on the Shumen Plateau.

Along the route, experts will show tourists interesting specimens of the plant world and will present the activities carried out to protect and manage the green wealth of the park.

Those wishing to join must wear suitable hiking shoes. No prior registration is required, the hike is free. The route to the rock monastery above the village of Khan Krum is marked with green and white markings.

According to historical records, the rocky ridges along the entire plateau were inhabited during the Middle Ages by hesychast monks, who carefully designed churches and cells, some of which were also painted.

The rock monasteries and access to them are described in a special booklet published by the Directorate of the Shumen Plateau Nature Reserve.
