The Biserna Cave is now closed to visitors. The restriction was introduced due to the beginning of the breeding season of the cave inhabitants - the bats. Until August, they will raise their young and the presence of people in the cave will prevent the development of the generation. Each pair has only one young per year. We remind you that the Biserna Cave is a protected habitat for bats, with 14 species found in it. Specialists from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences are expected to conduct a study on how the human presence in April and May affected the bat colonies.
Nearly 960 people have visited the Biserna Cave since it opened for visits on April 8. “The interest was huge, every working day the employees of the Shumen Plateau Nature Park welcomed groups,” noted the Park’s director, Vasil Vassilev. The cave formations were visited by visitors from the country and abroad – from Great Britain, France, Argentina and Germany. The cave will reopen to tourists in August. The management of the Shumen Plateau Nature Park is considering easing the access regime to the natural landmark and, in addition to working days, to have visits on weekends. However, it is mandatory for all those wishing to see Biserna to register in advance with the Park’s directorate. Groups of no less than 8 people are formed to enter the cave.
