- Familiarize yourself with the chosen route in advance. Get a map, guidebook or navigation device. If you get lost – move only on northwithout changing direction!
- Check the weather forecast – do not set out in clearly bad weather or a bad forecast. During a thunderstorm:
– do not stay less than a meter away from rocks and trees;
– do not cross ridges;
– move to the lower parts of the area.
- Inform your loved ones about the route you intend to take. Never go out alone in the mountains!
- Dress according to the season, but always bring extra clothes with you. Even if you go in a nice city, the weather in the mountains can be completely different or change abruptly.
POTENTIAL HAZARDS IN THE SHUMA PLATEAU NATURE PARK
Rock crowns and cliffs. The beautiful rock formations and massifs attract many visitors to the park and arouse the desire to conquer them. But they hide many dangers. REMEMBER:
- Don't stand near the cliff edge!
- Don't run, evaluate your every step!
- Do not go to the rock ridges and massifs without an escort!

Caves and ravinesSome of the caves in the Shumen Plateau Nature Park are deep and precipitous. Here's why:
- Do not enter caves without proper equipment and a caver companion!
- Be prepared!
Dangerous reptiles. Several species of snakes are found in the rocky areas, open meadows and forests of the Shumen Plateau. The venomous species of viper and viper are particularly dangerous.
- When going out, use high hiking boots. Don't step in tall grass!
- If you are bitten by a snake, immediately tie a string over the wound and drain the infected blood. Seek immediate medical attention, but do not run because this will speed up your circulation.
Dangerous insects. Tick bites can cause Lyme, Crimean or Marseille fever. To protect yourself from dangerous insect bites, use repellents.
- At the end of every outing, give your clothes a good shake.
- If bitten by a tick, seek medical attention.
Wild mushrooms. Several dozen species of edible and poisonous mushrooms grow on the Shumen Plateau. When picking mushrooms, use knives to cut off the stumps, because pulling them out with the roots leads to the destruction of the habitats.
- Don't pick wild mushrooms if you don't know them! Many edible species have poisonous counterparts.
Sharp tools and objects. A tourist's equipment sometimes includes sharp and cutting objects. Remember:
- Do not walk with a knife or a hatchet in your hand! You may get hurt if you accidentally trip or fall!
Dangerous encounters. Encounters with wild animals in the forest are interesting and exciting.
The most dangerous encounter is with a wounded or irritated wild boar. If attacked, climb a tree, and if you can't - don't run, but keep your cool and jump to the side. It will pass by without coming back to attack you again..
Situation assessmentIn the event of an unexpected change in weather, remember that:
- If you are standing near a cliff edge, you may lose your balance from a sudden gust of wind.
- If you are in a forest – get out of it, as the wind can knock down branches and trees.
- In case of fire, call 112 immediately and move away from the area.
- Do not stand in ravines and low places.
